Here's my prediction for mastodon:
* wave of new users, most will go back to twitter
* enough will stay to keep things interesting and development will proceed apace.
* Valid feedback will be iterated on. instance-independent Identity, federated search, instance migration, performance tuning and bug fixes, etc.
* As it matures, it will grow.
Ultimately, a focus on keeping the community welcoming and easing the barriers to adoption will pay off.

One of the issues with only following people you see in your federated time line is that you aren't growing your instance's federation. There is possible growth if you are not in the other person's federation as you might end up being introduced to their instance.
The community needs to figure out a way to aid discovery outside of the federation.

I think by default Amaroq marks your toots as unlisted , so only your local instance can see your tweets

make sure to follow a lot of people from different instances so we can all expand the userbase
PSA for those who don't know: following people from other instances of mastodon will add their activity to your federation so everyone can see & share it
