I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as meme, is in fact, beer/meme, or as I've recently taken to calling it, beer plus meme. meme is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning beer system made useful by the beer core libraries, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by yata. Many computer users run a modified version of the beer system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of beer which is widely used today is often called meme, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the beer system, developed by the beer Project. There really is a meme, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. meme is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. meme is normally used in combination with the beer operating system: the whole system is basically beer with meme added, or beer/meme. All the so-called meme distributions are really distributions of beer/meme!

The instance admins on that blocklist were never even given a chance to defend themselves or their communities.  That is a problem.  I pointedly denounce any system of blocklists that is used as a weapon against communities that are disliked.  They should be used as a means to protect the network, not as a weapon of one so ial group against another,

#pgpday offer: if someone makes a plugin that does this in postActiv (adds fields to the user profile for XMPP address, and PGP key) and a patch for Qvitter that integrates it on the front end, I will pay you $20 (by paypal)

@parataxis I explained it badly I think - a group "lives" on an instance, but anyone can join it, and post/receive updates from it. So !dumpsterdiving lives on quitter.se, meaning that's where you go to join/leave/admin the group, and watch the complete group timeline. But once you've joined a group, you'll get all those posts to your own timeline (regardless if you follow the person or not, or even someone on their instance), and can post to the group from your own instance etc.

The real downside to this way of doing things is if/when instances go down, they take all their groups with them. So !fediverse was for example a fairly large group (15k members or so) of things that were relevant to the whole federated network, but oracle.skilledtests.com went down for reasons unrelated, so that whole group died and has yet to be resurrected. Likewise with some groups on status.vinilox.eu etc... See http://www.skilledtests.com/wiki/List_of_federated_Statusnet_groups on web.archive.org

Impressions of HLA/postActiv so far:

- 1000 characters per post, much better than 500
- Stuff is way faster than the Mastodon instances I was on
- I can share lots of images whoa (I usually don't post lots of images, but it's good to know that I can)
- When there's new activity in a timeline there's a message you have to click in order to load new posts, which is cool because you don't have to worry about the content you're reading scrolling down the page faster than you can read it
- The button is just labeled Send, not anything like Toot!
- No TweetDeck UI, which is okay because the UI looks and functions like Twitter, so the readjustment isn't difficult
- Searching for people and following them takes awhile, but it also took awhile on Mastodon instances too so maybe it's an ostatus/protocol thing

Overall it's very positive, but I'll stick around and see how it goes.

if anyone wants to help with this I have just been playing around. really just wanted to see how the whole network looked from a far. this should really be done with code not one by one like I am doing now but alas I started and this is what came out of it.

@deadsuperhero Your wish to extend him (or anyone) the benefit of the doubt is good on you, and I don't fault you for it.  I just hope you can understand, I had my reasons for not doing so. That said, Gargron isn't all of Mastodon and he definitely isn't the community, I've been quite pleased to meet quite a few new faces that are helping out or just chatting, and its nice to see the community grow.  It's just (I think understandably) upsetting to see someone who has in my opinion mistreated me getting that kind of attention.  I think it's only human to feel a bit burned by that.  Believe me when I say I try not to bang on about it.  It's just a hard thing to resist doing, especially with all the buzz around Mastodon right now.

@maiyannah @sim @sonya hmm yeah considering the influx of small mastodon instances, some of which are doing instance blocks, it's probably better to keep a list of known instances that block your instance and flag any posts that originates from that list with a "one way only" icon or something

been thinking about why i'm personally irked with the blocks, and realized that a large part is due to accidentally spending time and effort crafting a reply then finding out that the other person can't see my stuff anyway

@fl0wn @mangeurdenuage @sim It just makes him a martyr if we go after him, and I don't care to uplift a person who has trodden on me.  But I certainly aren't going to pretend he's some sort of saint like his userbase increasingly seem to make him out to be.  Poor Eugen, barely making a living on two grand a month, developing it all by himself, it's hard dealing with all this stuff he deals with.

Is anyone willing to actually discuss pseudo rules propping up as if they're community standards? Where is this widespread CW community standard coming from?

Why are people acting as if there isn't already instance rules? I'd understand in full if certain content was required to be tagged as per instance rules but why are all these federated messages coming through seemingly without any understanding that each instance has rules demanding everyone listen to their needs?

The ceaseless activism, arguing, pushing, "correcting the record", isn't what gets you better software.  It's hands on deck, its money in the hands of the people who can change things, its active development.  I'm just one person, my means are limited, and I cannot do this alone.
