if you're german (even if you're not), feel free to join mastodon.berlin
@edd oh trust me, some blackhat hacker is already figuring out a way to game the system for backlinks
Looking into costs for running our own #Mastodon instance.
Has anyone done any comparison between the most common providers for a quick-start?
Here is an in-depth area where I need development/knowledge help, for a feature that would make Masto even better/more reliable in terms of timelines sorting: https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/1059 I've been researching it for a while and wrote down all my findings.
Friendly reminder that even if you trust your admin, direct messages can be read by them. Private communications should be done via tools designed for this.

Friendly reminder : même si vous faites confiance a votre admin, il peut lire vos messages privés (DM). Les communications privées devraient se faire grace a des outils pensés pour ça.
Once a social network get "figured out", it gets dominated by min/maxers. It's nice to be somewhere this hasn't happened.
You know what's funny? Because of a quirk with queueing, we get to read brand new mastodon.social messages before their local TL does.
Should we not avoid using a tech concept (email) to explain another one (mastodon identities) to people with no tech knowledge? IMHO, a simple analogy (albeit less accurate) is human names: people can have the same first name (username) with different last names (instances), none of them is "official" or "authentic" or whatever, they simply are themselves and we never needed a global authority to forbid reuse of any given first name (quite the opposite in fact but it's not relevant here).
@TheGibson The net is inherently decentralized. Silos like Twitter and Facebook are brittle and ultimately ugly.
I will never get over the double @ sign when mentioning users.
@username@url
Its ugly
why not @username(url)
like an aria code?
For those who dont know, the federated timeline displays all the activity from all the people on other instances who are followed by people on your instance.

It is therefore very good practice to follow as many interesting people from other instances as possible. We are the ropes binding this distributed system together.
Would love to see something like #Twitter cards feature in #mastodon : https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/955
Imagine being able to support #Instragram or #GNUsocial for content in the stream. Hell, you could even do it with #GIPHY.
@Gargron Reasons mastodon.social will go extinct according to the author:
1. I'm embarrassed to say the word toot.
2. I don't understand the word federated.
I might be weak I MIGHT be considering going to bed
or I guess I could stay up all night and toot because who needs sleep
RADICAL THOUGHT
maybe the point of life *isn't* to accumulate wealth and capital but instead to have a nice time with your friends and loved ones and help others do so too
INTRO TO FEDERATION:
1. "mastodon" is a piece of software that runs on a server. There's a lot of servers that run it & u can follow ppl on other servers.
2. When u follow someone from another server, your server receives their toots.
3. The federated TL is all public toots that the server receives, ie all of the toots from everyone that ppl on your server follow.
4. ERGO: if u want to see more toots in the fed TL, follow + get other ppl on your server to follow ppl from other servers!
A young person told me today that their parent told them they need to learn to knuckle down to studying in a quiet room with no distractions if they want to get a great programming job one day.
My response:
"That's interesting, because I do my best hacking while watching spaghetti westerns, chugging caffeine, with 2-3 messaging clients open, being intermittently hugpounced by my son and SO."
Do what keeps you sane and productive.
Mastodon is pretty strange. Guess it remains to be seen whether it'll stick or not. I hope it does. Twitter just isn't cutting it for people anymore.
kudos to the French posting both french/eng versions of shit, no way I have that kind of commitment
