in the fully digital technocratic future, glitches that slip through the false perfection of systems are revered; compression artifacts become minor gods. children born with birthmarks resembling jpeg ringing are seen as omens of fruitful data mining harvests to come

Fascinating dynamic unfolding across Mastodon: instances are dividing into two ideological factions: safe speech, and free speech.

The safe speech instances are likely to start sharing domain-level blocklists (like Adblock but for speech) in the near future, to "curb harassment".

The free speech instances legitimately don't seem to care, and so far, have held much more interesting, substantive and intellectual conversations than the safe speech zones.

What can you expect from me? Free speech.

RIP Bob Taylor, who played a role in the creation of the ARPAnet, the personal computer, Engelbart's mouse, Xerox's desktop metaphor, and more. Also (this guy didn't slack) co-wrote "The Computer as a Communications Device" (1968) with Licklider.

.@mayel @Antanicus @Gargron #platformcoop #instance governance proposal in 1 toot:

Members pay a $1 membership share to join, and commit to paying a $0.10/mo subscription via #Gratipay (a platform co-op). If there is surplus beyond costs, members can propose platform improvements to create bounties for, and then vote on their favorite proposals. Top vote-getters get funded. Members also may propose & vote on instance policies, adjust monthly fee & pay patronage refunds. #mastodon

Maybe we could keep track of lag in federation publicly, so folks
know when _not_ to expect stuff to show up. Seems not terribly difficult,
since the local database has other stats of remote systems(users), like favs/boosts.

I added the number of active instances to the text summary of the @mastodonusercount bot. These are the instances that instances.mastodon.xyz reports as being "up". Currently at 350!

Hello everyone I'd like to introduce the new @ambassador from a.weirder.earth

This is my attempt to fix the followbot problem. If you're an instance admin, you can install an ambassador bot on your instance.

The bot will boost the most popular toots from your instance. Someone can follow your ambassador to have your instance's best content added to their federated feed.

Feedback welcome, code here: github.com/mbilokonsky/ambassador
